Short Life
Many people who like unblocked games know that the first few levels of Short Life, a survival platformer game, are very hard and require perfect time and reflexes just to get through them. This cruelly difficult flash game, made by Matt Stark, has a reputation for making even experienced players test their patience as they try to beat it quickly in a style called "speedrunning" without giving up in anger.
Game Overview
Short Life looks like a pretty easy game at first glance. Players control an unnamed character who is racing against the clock through a number of short but dangerous levels to get to the finish line before time runs out. You can only run and jump, so you have to be careful as you move across narrow land bridges and platforms and avoid the many traps and other dangers that are in your way.
There is a catch, though: you only have 20 seconds to finish each handcrafted gauntlet full of sawblades, spikes, lasers, bombs, and other hazards that are meant to kill you by mistake. To get across huge death holes in such short amounts of time, you have to learn by trial and error the best ways to get from one place to another. Lucky for you, each level quickly restarts after you die, so you can try again and again, because you will die a lot.

How to play Short Life
To know when it's safe to pass through grinders, look for visual cues and audio cues that are synced to traps.
When you're trying to remember something, write down details that could be traps, but don't just ignore them. Instead, focus on getting from one to the next. To keep going, find safe spaces in the middle of the gauntlet.
Let moving platforms take you as far as they can before getting off and going to the next one. This will keep you from being exposed for too long in the air.
How to Do It
- To quickly grab ledges without losing too much speed, use downward corner stabs that briefly touch spikes. That "coyote jump" saves a lot of time.
- Save your airjumps for when you need to cross gaps, not when you're scared of getting hit. People who use time double jumps wisely don't waste them.
- When you land, you should slide down walls while keeping your momentum in the direction you pressed into, instead of resting, stopping, and then starting to move again.
Thoughts on
- Not only full level clears should be celebrated, but also small wins like making tricky jumps for the first time. Everything is getting better.
- Aim to finish, not to beat the time you set early on. Do the basics right before you optimize.
- Stay motivated and try new things. The answer is somewhere in creative pathfinding or fine-tuned technique, just ready to be found.
- While Short Life is very hard, success is always just a few more tries away once your knowledge and muscle memory match up for that one perfect run that will win you glory.
