- Frotz (for various platforms)
- Gargoyle (a multi-interpreter that includes Z-machine support)
- Lectrote (a modern, cross-platform interpreter)
2. Find Z-machine games: These typically have file extensions like .z3, .z5, or .z8. Many classic Infocom games are available, as well as newer interactive fiction created by independent authors.
3. Load the game: Open your chosen interpreter and load the Z-machine game file.
4. Play the game: Z-machine games are text-based adventures. You interact with the game by typing commands, usually in simple English. For example:
- "look" or "l" to examine your surroundings
- "inventory" or "i" to check what you're carrying
- "go north" or just "n" to move in a direction
- "take lamp" to pick up an object
- "open door" to interact with objects
5. Read carefully: The game will provide text descriptions of locations, objects, and events. Pay attention to details, as they often contain clues.
6. Experiment with commands: If you're not sure what to do, try different verbs and interactions with objects in the game world.
7. Save your progress: Most interpreters allow you to save your game state, which is useful as these games can be challenging.
